‘Kill the Messenger’

killthemessengerWhat went wrong? Brilliant conspiracy theory potential for a powerful film – CIA smuggling billions of dollars of heroin into the US to pay for arms to fight their fight in Central America: small-time journalist (Jeremy Renner – The Hurt Locker, The Avengers) becomes the whistle-blower, his family is threatened and the journalist himself undermined by a smear campaign. All in all – a massive story. And based on a true one.

Sadly, Kill the Messenger is dull and uncinematic. It falls between two stools and, in trying to focus on telling the mundane story of the man himself, missed every potential thrill – even the threat to the family home by ‘operatives’ was humdrum instead of tense.

For some reason, the movie totally worked for me. Maybe it’s because I’m a journalist myself, but a certain element to the way in which it portrayed its story rang true and felt as honest as it could get without making too many assumptions. Good review.
