‘Love and Mercy’

Love-MercyLove and Mercy is a somewhat disappointing telling of pop savant Brian Wilson (Beach Boys) breakdown and recovery with the support of (now wife) Melinda Ledbetter.

It’s certainly not your average music biopic – but in splitting the film into two time periods, the film fails to emotionally connect. An indication that it doesn’t quite work is that it’s Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect) as Melinda who’s the standout – not John Cusack (High Fidelity, Being John Malkovich) or Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood, 12 Years a Slave) as the younger 1960s Wilson.
