creedmovie_2015-Oct-28Polished with strong performances but a lack of connection results in a laissez-faire drama. Maybe it would have helped if I’d seen all the previous Rocky films?

When it’s good, Creed is very good (particularly early on). But it’s a little too patchy – and a couple of 21st century takes on original Rocky scenes are just plain bad. But it’s visually riveting stuff – with Michael B Jordan (Fruitvale Station, Fantastic Four) proving he’s one of the hottest properties around. And it’s the first film I’ve understood Sylvester Stallone’s mumble….

There’s a chance this may well feature in the awards season – critics have loved it and the Boston On-Line Film Critics gave their best actor award to Jordan and supporting actor to Stallone.
