‘In the Heart of the Sea’

in-the-heart-of-the-sea-posterIt’s better than anticipated, but In the Heart of the Sea remains a somewhat stolid telling of a story inspired by the legend that is Moby Dick and Herman Melville’s classic yarn.

Impressive at sea, waterlogged on dry land, there’s more than a passing reference by director Ron Howard to his earlier  Apollo 13 without ever reaching that particular film’s heights (sic). And the pat ending is just too twee and sugar-coated.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers) is mere mortal but with god-like status as First Mate with green-behind-the-ears Captain Pollard (Benjamin Walker – Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Kinsey) something of a challenge for the seasoned 19th century whalers.
