‘Sunset Song’

73ff2f6c89198b5cde2f0302e241dee5It’s a slow, unfolding narrative of the early 20th century Scottish classic. Yet English working class hero Terence Davies (Distant Voices Still Lives, The Terence Davies Trilogy) envelops the audience in the rural love and heartbreak of young Chris Guthrie, the daughter of a dour and deeply religious farmer.

Measured and understated, Sunset Song quietly tells its story, with excellent performances, particularly from relative newcomer, Agyness Deyn (Electricity, Pusher) and seasoned actor Peter Mullan (War Horse, The Magdalene Sisters) as her father. But the story’s ending is strangely too restrained for full dramatic impact.
