‘The Split’ (Season 2)

The intensity of the family drama that is The Split continues into season two where Hannah (Nicola Walker) is still uncertain as to where her emotions lie. The dependable, loving husband of 20 years (Stephen Mangan) and father of her three children is the safer, more obvious bet. But the converted warehouse-living Christian (Barry Atsma), where the sex is better, offers more excitement and immediate gratification.

Nothing is straightforward. Just when Hannah seems to have made a decision, that responsibility and opportunity is firmly yanked out of her hands. There will be consequences, there’s no doubt – we can see the trainwreck that is waiting to happen.

Whilst focussing on the intricacies of Hannah’s relationships (personal and professional), season two of The Split does widen its scope. Middle sister Nina (Annabel Scholey) and mom (Deborah Findlay) in particular benefit as they become more rounded characters – and Nina drops a few bombshells as season two progresses. Boss Zander (Chukwudi Iwuji) almost takes centre stage with his pending marriage to Tyler (Damien Molony) and his reluctance to sign a prenup.

Writer Abi Morgan continues interweaving separate and connected narratives as client dramas reflect the ongoing Dante home sagas. Elaborate but all too real, complicated but effectively so obvious, The Split (season 2) with its outstanding ensemble of a cast, is an unquestionably superior family drama.
