‘Jill Bilcock: Dancing the Invisible’

A locally (Melbourne) produced documentary, a film within the film industry itself as the very personable Jill Bilcock is showcased.

An eminence gris, an unsighted cog in the wheel of film and television, Bilcock is one of the world’s most sought-after film editors. Oscar and BAFTA nominations, numerous Australian awards for local favourites as diverse as Moulin Rouge, The Dish, Japanese Story, The Dressmaker sit alongside credits including The Road to Perdition, The Young Victoria and Elizabeth.

It’s a fascinating story – from the early 1980s in Melbourne and college life, where an outspoken Bilcock moreorless fell into editing and a skill set more commonly associated with her male counterparts. Close working relationships developed over the years between Bilcock and Baz Luhrmann, Phillip Noyce, Shekhar Kapur, Ana Kokkinos – and all (among many others) have their say in this engrossing documentary.
