‘Berlin: Symphony of a Great City’ (Berlin – Die Sinfonie der Großstadt)

A glorious black and white paean to the city of Berlin, a day in the life of the German capital a decade prior to the ravages of the Second World War.

With a soundtrack from Edmund Meisel, director Walter Ruttmann (cinematographer on Metropolis) freeflows the visual rhythm, following the movements of crowds of people heading for work, children at play, swimmers, rowers, rarely focusing on a single person. From dawn until midnight, the cameras rove, capturing moments, celebrating the city that was.
