‘The Last Days’

Intense, personal reflections by five Hungarian Holocaust survivors, victims of the frenzied mass deportation of 434,000 Jews between 15 May and 9 July 1944. Allied Forces were liberating Europe towards a German defeat. Yet the final act of mass murder of a Jewish community pressed ahead.

Oscar-winning documentary from 1999, produced by Steven Spielberg and the Shoah Foundation, director James Moll follows the five survivors through their memories and experiences – as well as first (and last) return visits to the camps and their home villages.

It’s heartrending and confronting as personal stories come to the fore and are juxtaposed with archival footage of the full horrors of The Final Solution.

Won the 1999 Oscar for best documentary.
