‘Free Guy’

Pastel-coloured hi-tech comedy adventure tale set both inside a video game and in the offices of its computer-programming gaming company creator.

Bank teller Guy (Ryan Reynolds) discovers he’s an NPC (nonplayable character) in a brutal video game. As an ‘extra’, his life is uniformly repetitive and uneventful: NPCs do not see the digitally overlaid action. Problems arise when Guy falls for Molotov, the avatar of co-creator Millie (Jodie Comer). In the real world, Millie is at odds with company executive Antwan (Taika Waititi), having accused him of stealing the gaming program. In the video game world, NPCs are not supposed to develop feelings…

Directed by Shawn Levy, Free Guy is full of feel-good heart and immense entertainment. It runs out of steam and falls into the land of predictability towards the end but by then time has been invested in the goofy, nice-guy Reynolds.

No,ianted for bets visual effects Oscar in 2022.
