‘Silver Linings Playbook’

An entertaining character-based narrative exploring human communication and interrelationships, Silver Linings Playbook sees writter/director David O.Russell tackle mental health as the backdrop for a quirky, barbed romantic comedy.

Against medical advice, Dolores Solatano (Jacki Weaver) discharges her son Pat (Bradley Cooper) from a mental health institution. Diagnosed bi-polar, Pat has lost his teaching job and his wife: the condition of his discharge is that he moves into his parents Philadephia home. Pat is determined to stay off his meds and win back Nikki, illiciting the help of Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence). But recently widowed, Tiffany has her own problems.

Anxieties and obsessions percolate throughout Silver Linings Playbook – from Pat’s struggle with rational thoughts through to dad (Robert De Niro) and his superstitions. The result is meaningful, moving and empathic along with some occasionally gloriously funny moments.

Nominated for 8 Oscars in 2013 including best film, director, actor, supporting actor, supporting actress, adapted screenplay – won 1 for best actress.
