‘The Gray Man’

An all-star, all-action thrill as secret CIA operative Six (Ryan Gosling – La La Land, Blue Valentine) finds himself compromised within the organisation and a target for assassins across the globe.

Recruited by Fitz (Billy Bob Thornton – Monster’s Ball, Bad Santa) years earlier from a potential long prison sentence, Six lives on the margins, the grey zones between official and unofficial. But he comes into possession of damaging material for Langley colleagues when a Bangkok operation, overseen by Carmichael (Regé-Jean Page – TV’s Bridgerton, Waterloo Road) back in Washington, goes badly wrong. As a now-retired Fitz does his best to protect his protege, so a psychotic Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans – Captain America, Knives Out) is dispatched with license to kill.

Cliche driven it may be, but the latest offering from Antony & Joe Russo (Captain America, Cherry) is a blast of entertainment with both Gosling and Evans playing against type. Forgettable it may be but with Ana de Armas (Knives Out, No Time to Die) and Alfre Woodard (12 Years a Slave, Cross Creek) also in the mix, it’s an enjoyable romp that will undoubtedly have legs much the same as Jason Bourne spawned several adventure thrills.
