‘Crazy Rich Asians’

A culturally specific rom-com, Crazy Rich Asians (based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Kwan) subverts the genre’s tropes, resulting in a fun ride that sees a predictable ending but a very different journey getting there.

After more than a year of dating, university lecturer Rachel Chu (Constance Wu – Hustlers, TV’s Fresh Off the Boat) is finally about to meet the family of Nick Young (Henry Golding – The Gentlemen, A Simple Favour). Flying to Singapore, she has no idea of the extreme wealth of the Young family. Judged by all around her as a gold-digger, Rachel is forced to seriously question her relationship with Nick – and discovers a few unexpected home truths along the way.

Facing Nick’s tough and judgemental mother (a disdainful Michelle Yeoh – Everything Everywhere All At Once, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), privileged family members as well as his friends, Rachel struggles under the barrage of snobbery and hostility. But supported by former college friend, Peik Lin Goh (Awkwafina – The Farewell, Ocean’s 8), she navigates her way through the high-gloss captivation directed by John M. Chu (In the Heights, Now You See Me 2).
