‘Close’

Emotionally devastating as the intense friendship between two pre-teenage boys shifts when they change schools.

Virtually inseparable from a young age, Leo (Eden Dambrine) spends more time at the home of Remi (Gustav De Waele) than his own in the idyll of the Belgian countryside. Their bond is intense, a bond which slowly unravels as judgements are made by new school friends on the nature of their friendship. Leo looks to new sporting interests as Remi struggles with rejection.

Adults are secondary characters as, following Leo’s decision to take up ice hockey, tragedy unfolds in writer/director Lukas Dhont’s (Girl) visceral realism of a narrative. The two boys in their film debuts are deeply impressive as this tender, sensitive tale of friendship and loneliness unfolds.

Nominated for 2023 best foreign language Oscar – winner of the Cannes 2022 Grand Jury Prize.
