‘Jack Ryan’ (Season 4)

On the verge of being confirmed Deputy Director of the CIA, Ryan resigns to follow a black ops assignment into Mexico and Myanmar.

It’s all change at the CIA following the enforced resignation of Miller. Herself about to be appointed Director of the CIA, Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel) faces tough questioning from Congress for support of past ops by the maverick Ryan and his team. Wright’s position is not helped by Ryan’s (John Krasinski) resignation and an assumed attempted coup in Nigeria, an American ally.

But, with covert support from the president and new Deputy, Greer (Wendell Pierce), Ryan manoeuvres between Washington and Mexico with undercover agent, Chavez (Michael Peña). Turns out the Burmese number two, Chao Fah (Louis Ozawa), wants to get his family out.

It being Jack Ryan, nothing is remotely straightforward over the six episodes of the final season as the ramifications of the corrupt Miller bubble to the surface. Forced to play politics of the Congressional hearing headed by the hostile Senator Henshaw (Derek Cecil) in Washington, Wright needs to tread carefully. But the action primarily follows Ryan, Chavez and old faithful, ex-CIA field officer Mike November (Michael Kelly) as they travel between Mexico, Croatia and, eventually, the triad compound in Myanmar.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (in the form of John Krasinski) had previously provided three seasons and 24 episodes of high-octane action interspersed with dialogue both believable and, at times, humorous. Season four sadly fails to continue where its predecessor left off. The narrative picks up in the last couple of episodes but season four is a somewhat turgid template of predictability and rehashed storylines – the character of wealthy humanitarian Zeyara Lemos (Zuleikha Robinson) should have you running for the hills!

A disappointing end.
