‘The Shawshank Redemption’

A soaring yet restrained story of friendship and redemption that evolves over many years between two inmates in the Shawshank State Penitentiary.

Imprisoned for the murder of his wife and her lover, banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) finds himself out of his depth in Shawshank, surrounded by seasoned inmates and hardened guards. A loner, over time he befriends long-termer Red (a dignified Morgan Freeman) as writer/director Frank Darabont quietly and effectively tells their story.

Full of emotions of compassion, joy, anger and fear, The Shawshank Redemption is riveting, powerful and wholly compelling as corruption runs rife in the prison where honour and decency lies with individuals rather than the system.

Nominated for 7 Oscars in 1995 including best film, actor (Morgan Freeman), adapted screenplay, score (Thomas Newman).
