‘Red Notice’

A generic light-hearted adventure caper that falls flat on just about every conceivable level, Red Notice is a dire effort by writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber.

Three ornate golden eggs – a gift from Mark Anthony to Cleopatra – have not been together for centuries. The whereabouts of two are known – the third is a mystery. Stealing one from the Castel San Angelo is straightforward enough for Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds). And the second is in his sights. But now Booth has The Bishop (Gal Gadot) on his tail looking to displace him as the world’s most wanted art thief.

It’s clumsy and dull as the romp travels the world from Rome to Bali, Russia to Valencia, Cairo to Argentina in search of eggs two and three. Reynolds looks to his irreverent, witty, nice-guy trope but is let down by an atrocious script whilst Gadot is simply Wonder Woman without her superpowers. But worst of all is Dwayne Johnson – a wooden, autocue-reading FBI agent acting outside his jurisdiction. A spiritless embarrassment.
