‘Extinction’

Planetary invasion narrative – but with one big, clever twist.

A recurring dream haunts Peter (Michael Peña) – so much so, he falls asleep at work in the middle of the day. Losing his family in an inexplicable war of destruction is the dream’s theme. With neighbours over for dinner one night, their city is invaded by extraterrestrial forces.

A low-budget sci-fi action feature, Extinction is a plodding predictability of a narrative with some howlers in its development. With the action confined predominantly to a small estate of modern high-rise apartments, director Ben Young attempts to instill a sense of claustrophobic powerlessness and fear. But it’s all somewhat obvious and pedestrian – in spite of that unexpected little twist.
