‘Julie & Julia’

A larger than life Julia (Meryl Streep – The Post, Silkwood) dominates the screen in the split time narrative of Nora Ephron’s (Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail) entertaining dramedy.

Looking for a challenge, writer Julie Powell (Amy Adams – Arrival, The Fighter) sets herself 365 days to cook all 500+ recipes from Julia Child’s first book – and to write about it in her blog. With husband Paul Child (Stanley Tucci – The Devil Wears Prada, Spotlight) having just been posted to Paris to the American embassy, Julia must find something to fill her time. The result is one of the most successful cookbooks of all time and which overhauled American culinary culture.

It’s a tale of two cities as Powell, initially supported by husband Eric (Chris Messina – Argo, Cake), gets on with the task (with a few issues along the way)in her Queens kitchen. But it’s post-war Paris and the delectable bonhomie between Streep and Tucci that is pure frothy delight as Julia battles the Parisian prejudice towards the thought of an American mastering the art of cordon bleu.

Nominated for 1 Oscar in 2010 – best actress (Streep).
