‘Blue Jasmine’

An Oscar-winning performance from Cate Blanchett (The Aviator, I’m Not There) cements the tale of wealthy socialite Jasmin crashing to earth following the arrest and death of her fraudulent financier husband, Hal (Alec Baldwin – The Departed, It’s Complicated).

Weaving immediate pasts of luncheons, the Hamptons and Fifth Avenue shopping with current arrangements of life in a cramped, two-bedroomed San Francisco flat with half-sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins – The Shape of Water, Maudie) and her two kids, Blue Jasmine is Blanchett’s film. Part privileged repellant, part relatably vulnerable, Jasmine’s denial (and prescription pills) emphasises an eloquent fragility that can turn on a dime when threatened.

A stunning character study but, being a Woody Allen (Annie Hall, Midnight in Paris) film, part neurotic comedy with a powerful supporting ensemble, of which Hawkins as the put-upon half sister is a stand-out.

Nominated for 3 Oscars in 2014 including best supporting actress and original script, won 1 for best actress.
